NW Coast Yup'ik Spoon
Regular price
$395.00
Traditional Yup’ik spoon, a finely crafted piece of Indigenous Alaskan artistry from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region. Carved from driftwood—often resilient, mixed-grain stumps known as mimernat to prevent cracking—these spoons were both functional tools and symbolic objects. The bowl of the spoon is decorated with black pigment designs, often depicting animal figures or ancestral lineage patterns that held spiritual significance within the community. The vibrant red coloring is typically derived from red ocher (uiteraq), a sacred pigment believed to symbolize vitality and respect for the natural world.
