This mid-19th-century pipe tomahawk head is a notable artifact of the North American fur trade and frontier era. These items were primarily produced by European manufacturers for trade with Native Americans, serving both as effective weapons and ceremonial smoking pipes.  The head features a standard axe blade on one side and a hollowed pipe bowl on the poll (the back side), allowing it to be used for smoking when fitted with a hollowed wooden haft. This specimen is forged from iron or steel and exhibits a decorative brass inlay, a technique often used to create "presentation pieces" for Native American chiefs or prominent figures. The blade is adorned with a stylized brass bird inlay, likely representing an eagle or thunderbird, which holds significant cultural and spiritual meaning in many Indigenous traditions. The transition from the eye (the hole for the handle) to the pipe bowl features decorative molding or ridges, characteristic of the 18th and 19th-century trade patterns.

Includes a contemporary haft.
