This firearm is a classic example of a Spanish colonial escopeta that features a percussion conversion built on its original miquelet lock mechanism. Originally designed as a flintlock weapon during the colonial era, it was updated in the mid-19th century to use more reliable percussion caps. The distinctive Spanish miquelet architecture is unmistakable, defined by its external mainspring, heavy upper cock, and a wide, striated frizzen face that has been modified to house a percussion nipple. The wooden stock displays a traditional Spanish-style, deeply grooved or fluted buttstock (culata de dehesa or "patilla"), which offered a secure grip and lightened the overall weight of the long arm for frontier horsemen or militia members. This robust fusion of European military tradition and practical frontier adaptability highlights the extensive service life common to weapons deployed across the Spanish Americas and Mexico.
