Guerrero Mexico Nahua Painted Copper Barbone Bearded Man Mask
Early 20th century Mexican Guerrero Barbone mask, a piece of traditional Nahua folk art from southern Mexico. The "Barbone or "bearded old man," mask typically feature elaborate, cascading beards. This particular mask features a prominent fly painted on the top front. Crafted by the indigenous Nahua people in the mountainous mining regions of Guerrero, such as Northeastern Guerrero or the town of La Parota. While many are produced as high-quality decorative folk art, this particular one was used in traditional ceremonial dances, such as rain-petitioning rituals or the Danza de los Diablos (Dance of the Devils). Constructed from meticulously hammered sheets of painted copper (repoussé).
