Northern Plains (Crow?) Knife Sheath made from reused Painted Parfleche
Northern Plains knife sheath, potentially of Crow (Apsáalooke) origin, dating to approximately 1900. It is expertly handcrafted from reused painted parfleche (stiff, untanned rawhide), a common practice among Plains tribes where older, decorated containers were repurposed into smaller functional items like sheaths. The piece showcases a vibrant mix of traditional techniques, including a front panel saturated with red pigment and detailed beadwork along the edges and top panel. The upper section features a classic geometric design with a dark cross centered on a pale background, flanked by bold stripes of red and blue. The characteristic curved edge is finished with intricate, multi-colored edge-beading in shades of green, blue, and black, while a triangular cutout near the top serves as a functional loop for belt attachment.
