Cheyenne Beaded Buffalo Hide Cradle
This Cheyenne Beaded Buffalo Hide Cradle is a striking example of 19th-century Plains Indian artistry, meticulously crafted using traditional sinew and thread-sewn construction. It showcases a classic early Cheyenne layout, featuring a single prominent lane of red white-heart glass beads that splits a field of densely worked white beadwork. The composition is anchored by distinctive blue triangular elements spaced along the sides, while the interior is warmly lined with protective calico cloth. Extending from the top are two tapered wooden support boards, heavily ornamented with metallic brass tacks arranged in linear and circular patterns. This combination of protective utility, exceptional beadwork mastery, and structural design highlights the spiritual care, honor, and prestige bestowed upon children in Cheyenne culture.
